The Authority and Sufficiency of Scripture

Dearly beloved in Christ,

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, and for training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16–17).

We receive all these books, and these alone, as canonical, for the regulating, founding, and establishing of our faith. We believe without any doubt all things contained in them, not so much because the Church receives and approves them as such, but above all because the Holy Spirit testifies in our hearts that they are from God, and because they bear the evidence of this truth within themselves. Even the blind are able to see that the things foretold in them have indeed come to pass.

We believe that this Holy Scripture fully contains the will of God, and that everything one must believe for salvation is sufficiently taught in it. Since the entire manner of worship and service which God requires of us is described therein at great length, no one, whether an apostle or even an angel from heaven has the right to teach anything contrary to it. As the Apostle Paul declares, “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned” (Galatians 1:8).

Furthermore, since it is expressly forbidden to add to or subtract from the Word of God, “See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it” (Deuteronomy 12:32) this plainly demonstrates that the doctrine of Scripture is perfect, complete, and sufficient in every respect.

Therefore, we must not consider human writings, no matter how holy their authors may have been as equal to the divine Scriptures. Nor may we place custom, the majority, antiquity, the passage of time, persons, councils, decrees, or official decisions above the truth of God. For truth stands above all things.

For all human beings are liars by nature and more vain than vanity itself. Consequently, we reject with all our hearts everything that does not agree with this infallible rule, as we are taught by the apostles when they say, “Test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1), and again, “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house” (2 John 10).

Therefore, Holy Scripture alone stands as the final, sufficient, and infallible authority for faith and life, fully revealing the will of God for our salvation. To it we gladly submit, rejecting all teachings that contradict its truth, and resting in its divine perfection.

Yours in His Service,

Rev. D. Luckas
